Description of service
What are inlays, onlays and overlays?
Inlays, onlays and overlays are either conventional fillings or filings that accurately match the missing tooth tissue.
How are inlays, onlays and overlays made?
Inlays, onlays and overlays are prepared at a lab, using prosthetic materials that ensure higher durability and aesthetics than those used for standard teeth fillings. They are bonded to the tooth permanently, in one piece, like a missing puzzle. Inlays, onlays and overlays replace worn down or broken teeth parts, and strengthen the rest of the tooth. This is important particularly if you have suffered from a significant tooth fracture or extensive decay.
When are inlays, onlays and overlays used?
- In the case of dental cavities that affect 60–70% of the tooth surface (after caries is removed, the tooth requires strengthening);
- In patients with extensive discoloured cavities resulting from the replacement of amalgam (silver) fillings;
- In patients after root-canal treatment to strengthen the tooth and as alternatives to glass fibre or crown-root inlays;
- In the case of patients who gnash and clench their teeth, or after orthodontic treatments for the restoration of the occlusion;
- For better aesthetic results of fillings; inlays, onlays and overlays accurately reflect the natural, anatomical shape and colour of teeth;
- As alternatives to conventional conservative treatment (fillings).
